n3ont1g3r asked: Pssst, hey. I'm not sure if you've already joined the HSO or if you'd be interested in doing so, but if I'm correct then by the time signups re-open on Friday there should be three places open on Team Rose/Kanaya. You're a fantastic artist and I'd be psyched if you joined.

Not Gonna Try To Explain These
Are you going to go to Fanime? Would you prefer I mail you the pictures or would you rather I hand them to you at the convention?
I have three of four done, so I can just send them out whenever I get around to it, but to be quite honest Fanime is my top priority at the moment, so if you’re going and want your art sooner rather than later, Fanime is probably your best bet!
But I don’t mind mailing them anyway, it’d just have to be after Fanime!
Sorry for taking so long on them, and thank you for your purchase regardless! You all have been great :]
I sometimes get really emotional when I see artists under-pricing their wonderful artwork, because it not only devalues THEIR work but OTHER artist’s work as well.
Sometimes I think artists forget it’s not only the time The Market should be paying for when they buy a commission, it’s their skill too. And even IF you only price yourself/your work at minimum wage, even an hour’s work should still amount to $7.25 (depending on your state). If your piece of art takes, say, 2 hours, you should at LEAST be pricing it $14.50.
If an artist’s prices are 5$ for something that takes them 1 hour, then something that will take them/someone 3 hours will only be “reasonably” priced at $15.
The Market (AKA The People Buying The Artwork) starts to expect high quality goods at a cheap price, which means they won’t want to pay a proper price for something that is high quality. Market’s start feeling entitled to a “fair” price, and if that fair price has consistently been a low price… well…….. That doesn’t end up good for any artist.
THEN there’s the added price for Skill, something that takes years and years of practice to develop and perfect, and even if you don’t think your skill is up to par to price it TOO high, you should at least be adding $5 or $10 to the overall price to account for your skill (regardless of what you perceive that to be).
The thing about being an artists is… You’re taking the time and effort to create something specifically for someone, something beautiful and time consuming.
You shouldn’t be under-pricing that!
I’ve heard the argument “I’m not very good” from multiple artist friends who consistently price their artwork at $5 to $8 to $10 and justify this low price because they don’t value themselves/their skill or they “don’t spend too much time on it”.
But WHY ARE YOU SLICING YOUR PRICES IN HALF BASED ON YOUR SKILL OR LACK THEREOF?
If you’re selling a product someone is going to need to want it (see: supply and demand), which means they WILL pay for your time and skill (whatever you perceive that to be), regardless of what that is (could be $3 could be $20).
If they don’t want it, they’re not going to want it more because it’s suddenly cheaper. Although you MIGHT attract some business it won’t ever be enough with an unfair (to yourself and others) low price.
(From my previous experience, most people will save up their cash in order to buy artwork from an artist they favor [Ex. Me, I’ve saved up to buy from artists I admire even if I could have gotten more artwork from cheaper artists])Because the unique thing about art is that… Although sometimes someone can imitate your style (see: Disney, Fairly Odd Parents, Invader Zim, Homestuck, etc.) there is only one you.
You, as an artist, are unique in the sense that someone CANNOT buy your skill from someone else, you are the only person who can do what you can do.
You gotta sell yourself, and DON’T sell yourself short, or you’ll always end up with the short end of the stick. There’s a reason commission prices are so low nowadays, see: deflation.
Did I ever reblog this on my art blog?

First comment batch from when Varana met a Froggy Swamp Lady who was going shopping.
Next batch of comments from when she visited Kyoshi Island and met a Kyoshi Warrior. Then sang a song for her that she made up on the spot.
Varana, everyone.
I only got to play her for a very small amount of time unfortunately sob. I LOVE YOU VARANA… ; < ;
